Captain Nigel H. Malpass F.N.I., M.R.I.N. and Mrs. Gillian A Malpass
Captain Malpass was born in 1946 and spent some 40 years with the Bibby Line of which the first 23 were at sea serving on a variety of tonnage. This sea service went from Passenger, through General and Bulk Carriers to OBO, VLCC, and finally Product and LPG tanker tonnage. After 8 years as Chief Officer on the various tanker tonnage, he spent the last five years at sea in command of LPG, and VLCC tonnage before joining the shore staff in late 1985.
Originally based in Liverpool as Deputy, then Fleet operations Manager, he moved to the Isle of Man in 1988 to head up their offshore manning group of companies. At the time of leaving the Group in December 2002 he was a main board member of Bibby Line Limited, Managing Director of Bibby International Services Group Limited and Chairman of the subsidiary manning companies in the Isle of Man, India, and the Philippines. He left to set up Malmar Marine Management Limited with his wife Gill who had also had at that time some six years experience within the industry.
Current qualifications and membership:
Certificated Master Mariner
Holds dangerous cargo endorsements for both LPG and Petroleum tanker tonnage.
Fellow of the Nautical Institute,
Member of the Royal Institute of Navigation,
Member of the Honourable Company of Master Mariners.
Enrolled and accepted on the IMO Roster of contracted "experts"
Approved by the Isle of Man FSC to act as a "Four eyes"
Fellow of the R.S.A.
Holds a Diploma in the "Management of Ship Operations" from Strathclyde University,
m.v Derbyshire
In 2002 he appeared as a witness giving evidence to the re-opened investigation into the loss of m.v "Derbyshire" having spent some 12 months working with the legal team gathering evidence.
Currently sits on the following international committees
Chairman of the Isle of Man committee dealing with "Super/Commercial Yacht’s"
Chairman of the Isle of Man branch of the Nautical Institute,
Chairman of SeaVision UK NW Careers Group.
Member of the SeaVision UK national committee.
Member of the NWDA maritime cluster committee "Ambassador" project.
Member of The Isle of Man Ship Managers Association Executive committee,
Member of the S.S.P.A. Group advising the Government on the industries needs..
Acts as a representative on the International Marine Employment Committee,
Acts as a representative on the Chamber of Shipping Marine Personnel Committee,
Member of the Chamber of Shipping; Manning Review Committee
Approved for the IMO roster list of sub contracted experts
From May 1998 until February 2005 was a board member of the MNTB as one of the ship-owners representative and is still in close touch with the committee
He was involved in the writing of the N.I. book "Bridge Watch keeping".
In 2003 he authored module 6 "Manning and Training" for Lloyd’s maritime academy and the National Sea Training School’s Diploma in Ship Management. This continues on an annual basis and is currently revising and updating the 2006/07 module.
Malmar Marine has worked for many of the international law firms who specialise in maritime activities. They currently act as maritime advisors on manning and registration for two Governments, one in the Middle East and one in Africa. They are currently helping to re-write the Merchant Shipping Act for one of those Governments.
In May 2004 Captain Malpass became a "Professional Associate" of Glaisdale Management Limited a Corporate and Trust Service Provider after being approved by the Isle of Man FSC (Financial Security Commission) to act as an Isle of Man resident director as well as being part of the "Four eyes" team under the Corporate Service Providers Act. The owning Managing Director is a qualified English solicitor and as such specialises in work for Ship-owners and has for many years given expert legal advice to the International banking sector in regards to maritime finance.
Malmar Marine Management Limited is a small private company owned by Gill and Nigel Malpass. It operates 24 hours a day 7 days a week from dedicated office at their private residence using all the latest communications technology.
Specialising in nautical consultancy work with particular regard to advising clients on all the international aspects of manning, training, employing and deploying seafarers, as well as navigational issues, and Tanker operations. With a combined record of some 54 years in the industry they seek to act for clients who could make use of this maritime knowledge. Malmar Marine was audited and issued with a "letter of Approval" by the Isle of Man Marine Administration. Since January 2003 they have acted as Authorised officers and Flag State representatives for non resident Owners who wish their vessels to be either fully registered or demised chartered through the Isle of Man Marine Register.
